What is the difference between an authorization hold and a security deposit?

Both an authorization hold and a security deposit are funds that you hold in addition to the reservation payments.

An authorization hold is an amount that you hold to make sure the guest's credit card has enough funds on it to pay for their reservation.

A security deposit is an amount you hold to help cover additional costs if your property is damaged during someone's stay. If you charge the deposit, it will show up on the guest's invoice, along with the reason for the charge (to help avoid chargebacks), and the total payout of the reservation will increase by the amount that was charged.
