Charging a security deposit

A security deposit is an amount you hold to help cover additional costs if your property is damaged during someone's stay. In addition, with a deposit in place, guests are often more mindful of their actions that could cause damage.

Adding a security deposit to your listing makes it visible to guests, but the booking channels will not collect the funds for you. If you add a security deposit hold to the reservation, you will be able to charge the guest and collect all or some of the funds through the payment method attached to their reservation in Guesty.

Follow the instructions below.

Step by step:

  1. Sign in to your Guesty account.
  2. In the top navigation bar, click Reservations.
  3. Click the relevant reservation.
  4. In the banner at the top of the page, click Balance due/Payout.
  5. Find the "Payments" section, and click Charge to the of right the security deposit.
  6. In the pop-up, fill out the following fields:
    • Amount to charge: Can be the full amount or a part of it
    • Realization date: When the guest will be charged
    • Charge reason: You can provide a description of the guest's damages, which will be visible to them on the invoice.
  7. Click Charge.

A "Security deposit charge" invoice item will be automatically added to the reservation's guest invoice.

If you use our Accounting solution, you will also see an entry in the posting journal with the full amount of the charge paid to you (the PMC). You can follow these instructions to change that and split the revenue between you and the owner, for example.
